"Dreams May Never Come True"

Dear Editor:

I have a life and dream goal of becoming a dental hygienist. I want this so badly, the problem is is that my grades are not high enough, and I have a learning disability, I don't think I will ever get into the program. I know I could do an amazing job, so should I not let this bother me, and keep pursuing my goals?

I am almost finished high school, with no chance of getting into the program in September, what should I do?

Signed: Nicole

Dear Nicole:

Now that you are almost finished high school and you say you realize you have no chance of getting into the program, you may have to accept the fact that you might have to change your direction. Perhaps there are other things you can do that will get you into a type of dental career. For example, there may be some other kind of assistant work that you can do in the office, or you may be able to find a job working in a dental supply company where you are responsible for providing dentists with supplies.

The other option is to keep working towards your dream. Get some help with your studies. Take the year over again until you get the marks. Or go into some other program and take another try at it a few years from now when you may get into the program as a mature student.

As a young person, keep in mind that you have a long life ahead of you. Don't be in too much of a hurry to get into the work world. If it takes you a couple more years to qualify for the program, then so what. Go for it and follow your dream. However, if you find that even after giving it that second effort you can't make the grade, then don't put your life on hold. There is always something else that will give you just as much satisfaction. All you have to do is open your mind and recognize the signs when they come up.

I have a feeling that it is still too early for you to give up your dream. Give it another chance and see if you can make it happen.
