Dear Hopeful:
Unfortunately, you are like the vast majority of young people who
graduate from a post-secondary institution with a diploma or degree. You
spend three or four years getting an education so that you are ready to
begin a career, and then when you put down the cap and gown after your
grad party, you look at the certificate and realize that employers are not
beating down a path to your door.
As a Career Planning Advisor, I would say that you are about six years
late in beginning your search for employment. This search should have
begun while you were in Grade 10. There are other sections of this web
site that will explain what I mean in more detail, but basically, you
should have been networking and developing a relationship with several
potential employers during that period of time.
Now, the best you can do is get in your car and knock on doors of every
possible place where there are licensed and qualified electricians. You
must try to find someone who will hire you and take responsibility for
putting you through the proper training to help you complete your
apprenticeship requirements. This is not going to be an easy task, but it
must be done. You will have trouble finding any one place where employers
will list their name to find apprentices.
I wish you luck in your search, and I also hope that you will respond
to my answer in order to give advice to other young students in high
school. Let them know how you ended up where you are now and see if you
can give them some tips on how to be more prepared when they finally
      graduate.
Good luck. I hope you find a satisfactory placement.
